Similar terms with different uses
“Shop drawing,” “fabrication drawing” and “erection drawing” may be used differently across contracts and organizations. A title alone does not define responsibility. The assignment, contract documents and review process remain the governing references.

Reference documents
Before detailed documents are prepared, a project relies on drawings, criteria and requirements supplied by the designated parties. They describe intent, primary dimensions, interfaces and requirements that later drawings must follow.
Missing or conflicting information should become a formal question. Guessing a dimension or responsibility can move a problem into fabrication or the field.
Shop and fabrication drawings
These documents turn project scope into information used to prepare parts and assemblies. Depending on the assignment, they may show dimensions, marks, connections, interfaces, part lists or other details required for the work.
The level of detail, content and party responsible for checking can vary. The deliverable list should therefore be defined at the beginning: formats, conventions, review stages, authorized reviewers and the status required before fabrication.
Erection plans
Erection plans organize information used to install the structure. They may help identify elements, positions and the reference sequence. On their own, they do not replace field planning, review of actual conditions or approved work methods.
Transportation, lifting, access and storage constraints may affect how these plans are prepared. Those constraints are best communicated before fabrication.
Coordination connects the documents
Documents become useful when they share a consistent information base. A revised connection, moved opening or changed interface needs to appear wherever it has an effect.
A clear process identifies:
- The reference document and revision
- Who prepares, checks, comments and reviews
- How a question is submitted and resolved
- When a document may be used for fabrication or erection
- How revisions are distributed
- Which final deliverables are provided
What to provide when discussing an assignment
Assemble available drawings and specifications, review status, expected scope, deliverable formats, schedule and responsible contacts. Also state whether the need is detailing only, connection engineering, fabrication, erection or a coordinated assignment.
This information helps prevent one term from covering different expectations.
